What was the first hit record in the US written by Bob Marley? Here’s a hint. It was a hit in 1973 for an American singer. The answer is… "Stir It Up" performed by Johnny Nash. Marley penned the song in 1967, releasing it as a single on the Wailer’s own Wail 'N Soul 'M label in Jamaica. Johnny Nash released his version on the LP I Can See Clearly Now, and it was the first single from the album sent to American radio stations. It made it all the way to number twelve on the Billboard hot 100, and broke the top 10 in Canada. The Wailers remade and re-released the song on their first major label LP release Catch a Fire the same year.
