He Signed Lynyrd Skynyrd?!

Which musician is credited for discovering and recording Lynyrd Skynyrd? Here’s a hint. He played organ on Bob Dylan’s “Like a Rolling Stone”. The answer is… Al Kooper. Kooper made the decision to move to Atlanta Georgia and start a new label named Sounds of the South in 1972. It was to his fortune and Skynyrd’s that they met at an early gig the same year. Kooper quickly signed them, soon after, he engineered and produced their first LP Pronounced Leh'-nerd Skin'-nerd. His association didn’t stop there. Al Kooper actually engineered and produced the first three Skynyrd LPs, and is an uncredited performer on them. The studio version of "Freebird"? That’s Kooper on organ.
