That Comedian Recorded Music For Motown?!

What Canadian comedian started his career as a songwriter & musician signed to Motown? Here’s a hint. He was part of a duo… an immensely successful duo. The answer is… Tommy Chong. That’s right. Tommy Chong recorded for Motown as a member of Bobby Taylor & the Vancouvers. He also penned the band’s only radio hit, titled “Does Your Mama Know About Me”. After a short tour, the band split up… but while he was on tour, he went to a Second City comedy show, which inspired him to try the same in Vancouver. He called the project City Works, and a young Cheech Marin was a part of the troup, originally playing the straight man in skits. The duo struck comedy gold with skits like Ralph & Herbie & characters like Pedro & the Man. It wasn’t long before they made it to LA, where superstardom awaited them.
