What musical format was introduced by CBS in 1948( Here’s a hint. We still use the format today, and it’s gaining more popularity every year. The answer is… the 12 inch 33 ⅓ long-playing microgroove record, or simply, the LP. The big labels in the 40s, mainly Columbia and RCA Victor, were very competitive when it came to designing and mass producing the next big physical music format. Even though the technology in the manufacturing process for 78rpm 10 inch singles was improving drastically at the time, the 4 minute time format meant editing classical and jazz performances in unnatural places. The LP, even in it’s infancy, could hold 21 minutes of music per side, and it was made of durable vinyl, not the fragile shellac that 78s were made of. It didn’t take long for the format to catch on. RCA Victor followed suit in 1949, so by 1960, the 12’ 33 ⅓ long-playing microgroove record was king. Thankfully so. Vinyl records are the only permanent music format we have, so take good care of them!
