Which rock band started their career as The Golliwogs? Here’s a hint. Two of the members are brothers. The answer is… Creedence Clearwater Revival. Brothers John & Tom Fogerty along with CCR members Stu Cook & Doug Clifford were like a lot of bands that started in the wake of Beatlemania, except they had been playing together since 1959, originally calling themselves Tommy Fogerty & the Blue Velvets. After signing with bay-area jazz label Fantasy, co-owner Max Weiss renamed the band The Golliwogs. They released a handful of singles before John Fogerty & Doug Clifford were drafted into the armed services in 1966. While in service, Fantasy records sold to Saul Zaentz, who offered the band a chance to record an album. Since Weiss was no longer with the company, the band took advantage of the opportunity to drop the name they all hated for a name of their own… Creedence Clearwater Revival.
