Blondie Had The First #1 Record Featuring Rap Vocals?!

What is the first US #1 hit record to feature rapping? Here’s a hint. The song featured shout-outs to Grandmaster Flash & Fab 5 Freddy. The answer is… "Rapture" by Blondie. Debbie Harry and guitarist Chris Stein went to an early hip-hop party with Fab 5 Freddy that featured Grandmaster Flash and a revolving line of people freestyle rapping over Flash’s repeating drum breaks, Needless to say it made an impression, so much of one Harry and Stein set out to write and record a song featuring rap vocals, which gave birth to "Rapture". The entire back half of the song was Debbie Harry rapping about hip-hop heroes and guitar-eating Martians. The song spent 2 weeks at the top of Billboard’s hot 100 in early 1981. "Rapture" is not to be confused with the first all-rap song to hit the #1 spot. That honor goes to Vanilla Ice and his track "Ice Ice Baby".
