What is the first record album to be banned for cover art? Here’s a hint… it wasn’t the infamous Beatles butcher cover. There’s one that’s almost a decade older than that one. The answer is… The Five Keys On Stage. In 1957, R&B group The Five Keys released an LP titled The Five Keys On Stage. There was nothing purposefully immodest about the cover… all five members were standing on stage in the same direction wearing suits while sporting cheesy smiles for the photographer. It wasn’t until after the record was shipped to stores that a stink was raised over a group member's thumb that was positioned in a precarious spot… and that’s why collectors call it the "thumb cover" or the "penis cover”. Now, the record wasn’t a big seller, and the airbrushed cover sold way less than the offending original cover. But because of the story behind the decision, the thumb cover commands the most money... up to $375!
