Who are the only people to have their Grammy award revoked? Here’s a hint. It was two people in the same group. The answer is Milli Vanilli. It’s one of the biggest scandals in pop music history. Producer Frank Farian manipulated the naive duo of Rob Pilatus and Fab Morvan into being the lip-syncing poster boys for the music Farian re-recorded with session musicians. The ruse lasted a couple of years and in that time Milli Vanilli went as far as winning the Best New Artist award at the Grammys in 1990. The session vocalists on the LP soon announced publicly that Rob & Fab were frauds. The scam eventually ended with Farian’s 1990 public firing of the two with his own confession that Rob & Fab did not sing on the album or at any of the shows. This claim was confirmed by the duo, and the RIAA ordered Milli Vanilli to surrender their awards the following week. Lawsuits immediately followed for fraud cases against Rob & Fab and their label Arista Records. On August 28, 1991, a class-action settlement offered refunds to everyone who bought their music and/or attended their shows. The estimated number of potential claims? over 10 million.
